The Great Redeemer - Ruth 4
So there you have it. The story of Ruth is wrapped up today with a beautiful picture of Christ redeeming us.Boaz, responding to Ruth's customary request for him to be her redeemer, sets out to cut through the "red-tape" and marry Ruth. He realizes that there's a relative (a "redeemer") who is actually closer to Ruth than he. If this other relative purchases Naomi's land, he must marry Ruth. This man, however, did not wish to complicate his inheritance so with a traditional passing of the sandal, Boaz is given the right to purchase the land, and in turn acquired Ruth to be his wife.
So, in this short book we see how Namoi and Ruth went from destitute widows without family or property became redeemed and fulfilled. Ruth had a son, Obed, who later was the father of Jesse, who was the father of King David. So, not only was Ruth rescued from her poverty, she was blessed to be in the direct lineage of the greatest earthly King, David, and our heavenly King Jesus!
Who could have imagined it?
I guess the point for me is, we sometimes don't even realize what role we play in God's Kingdom. Do you think Ruth knew she would be the great grandmother of King David? We may plant a seed with someone who later becomes a Christian. We may show kindness to someone at just the right moment and give them hope. You never know how God may use you, or how He may use someone else to "redeem" you just when you need it most. Like Boaz cared for Ruth, your Heavenly Father cares for you more than anyone can - and He has the resources to back it up.
No matter what we've been through, no matter where we are now, our Redeemer can change everything in a moment. If, like Ruth, we remain pleasant and listen to the advice of those around us, God can change our circumstances and redeem us.
Thank You, Lord, for this timely reminder of your love and power. Increase my faith in You and help me to remain pleasant and open to advice. - amen
